Over the past two decades as a Family Nurse Practitioner, I have worked with individuals who developed fatigue, brain fog, sleep disturbances, anxiety, chronic pain, digestive issues, food sensitivities, histamine intolerance, and immune dysfunction after a tick bite. Many were told their symptoms were unrelated, stress-related, or simply part of getting older.

What I’ve learned is that tick-borne illness often extends far beyond a single infection.

Ticks can transmit bacteria, parasites, viruses, and immune-disrupting compounds. These infections may affect not only the immune system but also the gut, the brain, the nervous system, mitochondria, and the body’s ability to regulate inflammation.

Lyme disease is caused primarily by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi.

  • Muscle aches
  • Brain fog

Some people develop a classic bull’s-eye rash.

Many do not.

Some remember a tick bite.

Many never see the tick.

According to the CDC, Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in the United States, with cases continuing to rise in many regions.

Yet Lyme disease is often only one piece of a much larger story.

Lyme Disease Is Not the Only Tick-Borne Infection

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding tick-borne illness is the assumption that Lyme disease is the only concern.

In reality, ticks may carry multiple pathogens simultaneously.

A single tick bite may expose someone to:

No.
